Mekkelsen’s RV Sales and Rentals was founded by John and Grace Mekkelsen after a family trip to Maine in a rented pop-up camper, according to an article in Business People Vermont. The family had so much fun, they decided to spread the joy as dealers, starting with four Apache campers on the family car lot, later moving to an old farm outside Montpelier. With the old farmhouse serving as the sales office, the dealership was born. Since 1985 the company has been under the direction of Bruce Mekkelsen and his sister Connie Mekkelsen Cherrier. Today, RVs of all shapes and sizes cover the farm’s land, along with a bustling service department and parts and accessories store.
While the old farm wouldn’t be recognizable today, the family’s commitment to affordable RV vacations remains strong – so strong that the company rents more RVs than it sells.
