Plan Your RV Trip to Fort Myers, Florida
Are you interested in gorgeous scenery of the sun-and-sand variety for your next RV destination? If so, consider including Fort Myers, Florida in the itinerary for your next RV trip.
First up: Parking your RV at Upriver, an RV park along the Caloosahatchee River with sites that offer manatee watching practically in your front yard. The Caloosahatchee River is part of the Great Calusa Blueway and offers easy access by boat to many of Fort Myers’ exciting activities.
In addition to excellent fishing and boating, guests of Upriver enjoy golf, tennis, shuffleboard, horseshoes, and relaxing in the heated swimming pool and spa. Guest activities such as talent shows, potlucks, and live music are scheduled regularly.
When you are ready to leave the RV park, there are plenty of fun outdoor and indoor attractions to enjoy in Fort Myers. Dig your fingers into the sandy bottom of the river shallows in Caloosahatchee Regional Park to find fossilized shark teeth. Spend the day bird-watching at Columbus G. McLeod Preserve. Or stroll along the boardwalk in the Caloosahatchee Creeks Preserve to view the beautiful marshes – and the occasional alligator.
If you love the beach, you’ll want to visit the islands of Sanibel and Captiva to take advantage of 15 miles of warm sandy beaches for shelling, fishing, picnicking, or just relaxing the day away. When it’s time for more sightseeing, visit the historic functioning lighthouse on the eastern tip of Sanibel Island.
There’s plenty of culture and history in Fort Myers too. Explore the winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford at the Edison & Ford Winter Estates – 20 acres of historical buildings and gardens, the Edison Botanic Research Lab, and the Edison Ford Museum. There are numerous tour options and exhibits to see, plus more than 1700 plans representing more than 400 species in the gardens, so it might be helpful to plan your day at the Estates in advance.
Another history museum to check out is the Southwest Florida Museum of History in historic downtown Fort Myers. Explore the stories and artifacts of Paleo Indians, the Calusa, the Seminoles, Spanish explorers, and early settlers and view a 1926 La France fire pumper and a 1929 private Pullman rail car as part of the tour. From January through April, the museum also offers guided walking tours of downtown Fort Myers.
For a truly unique south Florida experience, visit the Shell Factory and Nature Park, which features a dog-friendly 68,000 square foot retail store, a Fun Park with bumper boats and miniature golf, and a Nature Park with nearly 400 animals, reptiles, birds, and fish. As the name suggests, the Shell Factory offers a huge variety of shells and shell-related products, like shell jewelry boxes, candles, wind chimes, and photo frames. When you’re all worn out from shopping, enjoy a meal of fried fish or baby back ribs at Capt’n Fishbones Seafood Grill.
If you have kids in tow on your Fort Myers trip, you’ll want to be sure to stop by the Imaginarium, which features hands-on science exhibits; children can run through a rainstorm, touch live sea life, practice their skills as TV meteorologists, and more. Or take in a Boston Red Sox spring training game at JetBlue Park or a Fort Myers Miracle match at Hammond Stadium.
When it’s time for a night out on the town, options include the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater, which seats over 170,000 guests annually. With concerts, a children’s theatre, a smaller venue called Off Broadway Palm, and a main theatre with tiered seating, there’s something for everyone at the Broadway Palm. Or check out the upcoming events at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall, which offers a speaker series in addition to Broadway plays, comedy shows, and symphonies.
