Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Just a short drive away from the campground, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore is the perfect place to experience the native wildlife and nature of the island! With miles of undeveloped beach land and ocean access, the peaceful experience you get when you visit here is unlike any other! The Seashore has three different lighthouses that line he coast, including two of which visitors are able to climb! If you enjoy stargazing, this is a great destination for you as well because there are few lights to pollute the night sky!

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

Originally established in 1938 as a habitat for migratory birds, this wildlife refuge has grown and now provide protection for endangered and threatened species. There are now more than 365 species of birds, 25 species of mammals, 24 species of reptiles and 5 species of amphibians that take refuge in this sanctuary that spans over 13 miles.

Wright Brothers National Memorial

If you love history, the Outer Banks has something for you too! North Carolina, known as the state that was first in flight, is home to Kitty Hawk, where Orville and Wilbur Wright flew the very first airplane. They chose the outer banks due to it’s unique landscape of tall sand dunes and cool ocean breezes. Here, you can walk the length of the first flight and climb up the hill it was taken off of. At the top, you can even enjoy a beautiful view of the islands.

Beaches

The beaches in the Outer Banks range from hilly dunes to flat plains and from calm and quiet to rough and windy. However, the diversity of the beach’s landscape is what makes the area so interesting and popular. With the ever changing winds, no beach or dune is ever left the same.

Ocracoke

If you’re really looking for a way to experience secluded island life, then take the ferry over to Ocracoke Island. This island is not connected to the main land and offers a different experience than the rest of the Outer Banks. Here, you can find Banker horses that are direct descendants of horses from the Spanish ships that wrecked off the coast. This is one of the two location. in the Outer Banks where you can see the only wild Spanish Mustang herds in the United States. The Banker ponies differ from a typical horse in size and, for the most part, have remained wild. On the island, you can take sunset horseback rides or visit the Ocracoke Light. Whatever you choose to do here, you day excursion is sure to be filled with fun!

Jockey’s Ridge

If you;re interested in seeing the best part of the dunes in the Outer Banks, we suggest going to Jockey’s Ridge. Here you can climb the dunes to reach an incredible view of both the ocean and sound. At the top you can fly a kite or hang glide down the side. Across the street, you can find the world-famous Kitty Hawk Kite store and other local shops. Just be sure to wear tennis shoes and bring water because that sand can get toasty.

The Lost Colony

Known as, “America’s Oldest Mystery,” the story of the Lost Colony still has yet to be uncovered. However, on Roanoke Island you can watch a reenactment of the events leading up to the colony’s disappearance and experience history in the location it took place. The performance is America’s largest outdoor drama and has even won awards for the quality of the show.

Charter Fishing

If you want to take your fishing a level up from the pier at the campground, take a day long fishing charter with a local captain! Leave out of Oregon Inlet near the campground and spend the day traversing the best local fishing routes in the sound and the Atlantic! Each season holds a new crop of fish so be sure to go when your favorite fish is in season.

Graveyard of the Atlantic

Because of the shallow waters and low lighting, the area known as Diamond Shoals holds one of the largest shipwreck beds in the the nation. With hundreds of known shipwrecks discovered, the area has been dubbed the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum holds countless artifacts from the shipwrecks in the Outer Banks and stands as an informational and educational experience for both kids and adults!

Lighthouses

One thing this strip of barrier islands is known for is the lighthouses that now line the coast. From the northern island of Currituck to the Southern Shores of Ocracoke and beyond, visitors can find 5 major lighthouses that include the Currituck Beach Light, Bodie Island Light, Cape Hatteras Light, Ocracocke Light and Cape Lookout Light. Visitors are welcome to climb most of the lighthouses, which each one offering a unique view at the top. The closest one to the campground is the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse which stands as the tallest lighthouse in North America. Learn the history and climb the 268 step winding staircase to reach the top.
