Fourth of July Travel Tips

by | Jun 25, 2018 | Tips & Tricks

The 4th of July is coming up faster than ever, and we want to make sure everyone stays safe while having a blast for the holiday (hopefully someone laughed at that terrible pun). There are tons of ways people like to celebrate the day, whether it be grilling out with friends, going for a dip at the local pool, or lighting your own mini fireworks at home.

Others, however, like to take advantage of the long weekend and go on a vacation. Whether you’re flying or driving to your destination, we want to make sure you get there safe and sound! Below are just a few traveling tips for your fourth of July weekend. Even if you don’t have plans just yet, there’s still plenty of time to decide what to do and where to go! Have fun and celebrate the sweet freedom we have!

Try to travel early.

Since the 4th of July falls on a Wednesday this year, many people will be turning the holiday into a long weekend vacation. Whether you plan on driving or flying to your destination, try to leave at a time where the roads won’t be packed or when the airport won’t be too crowded. If it’s possible, leave a day earlier in hopes of dodging the crowds.

Be ready for crowded planes.

Sometimes leaving early just for a holiday to avoid crowds just isn’t possible when you’re juggling a million things at once. We get it. Flights and highways are going to be packed throughout the week of the 4th so it’s important to give yourself a little bit of extra time so you can get through security lines and all the routine airport check-in stuff so you can get to your gate with plenty of time so spare.

Pack as lightly as possible.

If you’re a girl, you probably have a hard time with packing lightly. Resist the urge to pack those extra outfits so you can avoid added fees that a lot of airlines like to tack on for your baggage. If you’re a pro at packing extra light, some airlines offer a deals by speeding up the boarding process and letting you get on the plane before other others. You can only have one personal item, though.

Don’t forget to tell your credit card company you’re traveling.

It’s always a good idea to bring a trusty credit card with you anytime you travel. If someone ends up fraudulently using your card, your company may end up refunding you those charges. A few days before you head out, give your credit card company a call and let them know you’ll be traveling and where. Some companies cut off services when they see an odd purchase for your protection, but there might not be anything worse than having happen when it was actually you that made the purchase.

If you’re driving, pack plenty of snacks.

In this case, over-packing is not a bad idea! It’s a hassle to stop at a gas station or fast food joint when all you want to do is get to your destination! Packing all kinds of drinks and snacks will help you get there faster. You’ll only have to stop for gas and restroom breaks. Packing your own snacks will also save you money in the long run.

Complete all the routine maintenance on your vehicle.

The easiest way to ruin a fun road trip is getting a flat tire or having your engine light turn on half way there. To prevent this, take your vehicle to the mechanic and have all the maintenance done before you head out. In case something does happen, keep roadside assistance information with you. It’s also a good idea to map which route you plan to take before you get on the road. There’s typically more than one route that will get you to your destination, so deciding which one beforehand might cut down on travel time so you can avoid the route with heavy traffic.

Most importantly, do not drink and drive.

If you plan on staying in your hometown for the holiday, decide to have the party at your house if you plan to drink. Or, make sure you have a designated driver and be sure that they don’t slip any drinks while you aren’t looking! Having a few drinks really isn’t worth the risk of getting pulled over and going to jail and it certainly isn’t worth risking someone else’s life.
